Free Goods Friday: Electric

March 2

//

It’s Friday… and you know what that means? Another day where we are giving you the chance to get hooked up with some free gear. This week’s package comes from Electric which includes a Big Block Luggage that a few of our staff members were trying to steal for themselves, the big ol’ EG2 Goggle, and a SNOWBOARDER Magazine beanie. Since the brand is “Electric” after all, in order to win this package we want to hear from you of a way to save a little electricity. In the comment section below give us your idea how people could save a little extra electricity on a daily basis. We will pick our favorite answer to be walking away with this new gear.

Contest ends 3/9/12

Empty fridges/freezers use more electricity so if you’re running low on food stock it up with bottles of water or ice! Also after you’ve finished using the oven leave the door open, cheap way to heat up the place for a bit.

Landscaping is a natural way to keep your home cool in summer and reduce your energy bills. Trees, shrubs, or vines can deliver effective shade, act as windbreaks, and reduce your energy bills by positioning them in place to block the amount of sun hitting the house. Carefully positioned trees can save up to 25% of the energy a typical household uses, and it’s great for the air we breath.

By installing a clothes line both inside and outside of your house, you can air dry your clothes and save the energy that the dryer would have used. If you don’t like the crop feeling of the clothes afterwards, toss them in the dryer on a ‘no heat’ option, tumbling them, but using much less energy. You can also dry dishes by hand or let them air dry instead of using the dishwashers dryer settings. To add to this, only wash full loads of dishes or laundry to cut down on the amount of times running these machines in the first place.

When you are off to the slopes, car-pool with others to cut back on the amount of emissions being produced. Unplug your computer and other small appliances that will be using power even though you aren’t using them. This includes televisions, microwaves and computer/printers.

Cutting back on all of these things scan effectively lower your carbon footprint and if everyone was to do this we would be able to save a lot of energy and cut back on the environmentally harmful emissions we produce.

be adventurous. go out and do something with your day instead of sitting on the couch all day watchin tv and sitting on your computer. jut make sure you turn your shit off before you leave everyday.

  • Justin Deegan

Grow a big ol’ beard and keep your face warm. Get a girlfriend she can give you something to do, keep you warm, drive you around, wash your dishes and takes you out for dinner. You might give up some emotional energy but save on the bills.

Best way I’ve found is to hook up “power-sink” stuff to a surge protector, then attach that to a lightswitch controlled light. I have my HD TV, Xbox, PS3 and other gaming stuff (which uses a LOT of power even idly) and when I’m not using them they’re all totally off… not sucking power at all.

No lie, I save like $30 a month on having that stuff off. My next job is to set this up in my office/illustration room so that my PC, scanner, etc is all off the grid as well. Might be able to knock another $10 off my bill.

Seriously, this is the best thing you can do to drop power.

  • greg b.

Turn off your shit and get out the house!

  • Marcelo

People could save extra electricity… turning off, all devices that they aren’t using, that are plugged on, if the devices have lights when in standby, we can try plugged them off, then we are saving energy, and if you are on the computer, you can use lamps, using the USB entrance, then you can be well illuminated and saving energy, you also must turn off all the light’s you aren’t using at the moment. :)

  • Mike

get it on in the dark! you’re saving electric with the lights off, and if you really get after it you could heat your place too!

  • mike

lose your tv! get yourself a lawn chair and a cooler with beverage of choice and some snack, head over to that place with the tv in the window and set yourself up on the sidewalk. hopefully they have something good on tv, but even they don’t you got some free tv!

There are many ways to save electricity: More devices remain on standby this uses a lot of energy It is therefore very important that you turn off all devices before bedtime. and when you use your computer, printer or fax machine shut consume this still current as the plug into the socket remains. You will also be the best all these plugs into an extension cord and then stabbing the evening from the outlet. Now don¨t use to many electricity if youre going outside to ride snowboard/ski turn off your pc,tv and have fun!!

Keep electric eels in your water heater.

  • Natasha

People can save electricity every day by turning off their TVs or radios when they aren’t being used instead of leaving them on in the background while they do something else. Incandescent light bulbs are all the rage now so everyone can definitely transfer to those from their less efficient halogen ones if they haven’t already. Turn down your heater and cuddle up underneath the blankets or bundle up in layers at home to save a lot of energy.

best way to save energy is to make sure all the seats are filled on your chair lift ride up the mountain – don’t leave seats empty. this also cuts down on lift line times! It also makes you able to take more runs in a day!

Turn off the lights when you leave the room or you are going to bed. Make sure any type of electronic that is not being used either shut off or in standby mode. Change out your regular wattage lightbulbs for the “energy saver” lightbulbs. If you aren’t home don’t run the AC or Heat since that also consumes quite a bit. Also One way I have found to save electricity is just not be home. Go out, be active, take a bike ride, or head up to the mountains with some friends. Go to the park and grill out. There are tons of ways to save, but the biggest I feel is just being mindful about the amount of electricity you use on a daily basis. If you do that you will save your wallet as well as help the environment out at the same time.

  • Sam

Save electricity by quickly coming up with a kick ass line that wins you this competition, instead of staring blankly at your computer screen for hours like a donut – it uses less power, and you have more time to imagine owning all that awesome stuff.

stop wasting electricity spending time writing comments on snowboarders free goods friday trying to win some free shwag and instead of heading to ur local mountain were it wastes millions of watts of electrcity on the chairlift just go to a small hill and bring a few shovels to make some features, invite your best buds and have the most memorable session of your life.

  • Kevin Cape

The way I find best to save electricity is to first of all you don’t need house lights durning the day open your blinds people let in the sun we love. Hook your laptops and such into a surge protector and unplug it if you’re not using it. Get rid of your T.V.’s they are a waste of electricity, instead get off your duff and go hit the pow with your dope Electric googles and your beanie. Entertain yourself, who needs video games when you can get out there and bust out the tricks yourself. That way you save cash on electricity for lift tickets, come on whats more important people!!!

If you want to save money on electricity, a lot of people don’t realize this but turn your thermostat down 3 degrees and put on a hoodie. You will save money on gas and electricity. But just doing simple things, like turning the lights out when you are done in a room, using a clothes line instead of a dryer, will decrease the amount of electricity you use. So basically, everyone here has given absolutely great answers, now it’s up to you to get away from the computer do one of these things, and start saving money!!

  • Bryan Pogue

The best way to save money on electricity is to turn down the thermostat and go out boarding, it’s not like your home anyways… and turn off all the lights

  • simon

the best is not use electriciti att all camping fire and beer that its on a montain full off snow

  • Jon lane

Breed koalas. They can run on little wheels to generate energy for tv cuddle up for warmth ( lets be honest who doesn’t want to use a koala as a pillow?) we could train them to fetch the remote, I’m pretty sure they could carry a bottle of beer. They would be Able to pull you on a sled easily if you had enough. You could use them to pick up girls ( all girls love koalas) to be honest with you I don’t know why we haven’t converted to koala energy already …..

  • marlon

switch from electricity to solar energy! saves a ton of money and natural light is a lot better

  • Travis

Unplug electronics from the wall if your not using them. This helps save energy even if the device is turned off. Wrap your windows in the winter to save on heat. Open shades to let in the natural light during day, and close them at night to keep heat in. Use cfl lightbulbs and buy them in bulk. Fix leaky faucets. Use lids on pots and pans to make cooking faster. Close refrigerator door. Showers not baths. When your gone for long periods of time turn thermostat down. Check exterior of home for air leaks. All that good stuff can help save energy. Easiest of all would be too become Amish and then you never have to worry about electricity; problem solved completely!

  • Nicole Rickards

Simply…UNPLUG what U r NOT using….. When I’m NOT using the toaster, I UNPLUG it……when I’m NOT using my TV I unplug it….every little bit, ads up and makes a difference. Try it, then look at your PG&E bill next month. Or how about go SOLAR !!

Snuggie of course. Heat bill got cut in half!

  • Matt

The best way to save electricity is to NOT use it when you’re not using it. For instance- if the TV is on and you aren’t watching it, turn it off. During the day, open the blinds so heat comes in if you need it. If it’s winter and the house is cold, set the heater between 72-74*

  • ryan mills

put a spring and a generator on the bottom of peoples’s couches so every time they sit the resistants will generate energy, since our country does nothing but sit on our asses mine as well make some electrons move… i don’t know either that or solar panels

  • Ivan

Only charge your laptops and phones at solar powered charge station hubs around your college….more money for snowboarding + better for the environment =win

  • Nic

I use the huge lens of my EG2′s to roast food on the mountain. It takes a while but no electricity used!

  • JCoov

  • sebastian roemendael

Wearing Electric sunglasses instead of pressing on a button to close the sunblinds !!

  • Logan Hall

Solar panels can be made quite simply by just following a couple YouTube videos. They are also very inexpensive to make considering how much electricity they will save you. One of our favorite electricity savers around the house is opening the windows and blinds to allow for natural light and cooling!

  • Wibstad

Unplug phones and computers before going to sleep. Turn off lights if your not in the room and just don’t watch TV :)

  • Alexis

Unplug all the eletric stuff you don’t use while at work or at school so it doesn’t suck up energy for nothing!

  • Nick

well to start, everyone should have to go to http://www.snowboardermag.com
look through the 2012 buyers guide, find some equipment, purchase that equipment, and then go snowboarding. if everyone was at their local hill, there wouldnt be any electricity being used at their homes. the hills have to use the electricity to power lifts any ways, might as well fill them up fully!!

  • Joseph Kelly

turn off your television, video, playstation, and other entertainment devices when they are not being used.
Do not leave your television etc in standby mode. Devices can use up to 90% as much power in standby mode as when they are on, so it is a serious waste of energy when a device is left constantly on standby. If you keep forgetting, consider purchasing a PowerSafer – a device which automatically cuts power to applianceswhen they go into standby mode.
Replace all of your inefficient incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient CFL bulbs. Replace halogen spotlights with much more efficient and longer lasting LED Spotlights.
Hang your clothes out to dry rather than using an electric tumble dryer. Ideally use a spin dryer before using the tumble dryer.
Cook many items at the same time when your electric oven is hot.
Use a microwave to reheat food or to cook small portions. Although a microwave uses a lot of power, it does so over a very short time and so saves energy overall.
Turn down your heating system thermostat. For every degree you lower your heat between 60° and 70° F you can reduce your heating bill by up to 5%. Wear an extra layer of clothing in the house so that you stay warm. Turn down individual radiators – for example, 16°-18° is warm enough for bedrooms whereas 20°-22°C is more comfortable in bathrooms. Rooms that are rarely used can have their heating turned all the way down or off.
Purchase energy efficient white goods (washing machines, tumble driers, fridges etc). Although they usually cost a little more initially, the cost savings in electricity will cover that many times over. As an added benefit, efficient items are usually better made and last longer than inefficient models.
Vacuum clean the condenser coils at the back or underneath your fridge freezer. Accumulated dust reduces their efficiency by up to 25% adding that cost to your electricity bill.
Keep your fridge full, but not so full that air cannot circulate properly.
Fold clothes straight out of the tumble drier while they are still warm to save on ironing.
Cool cooked food before you put it into the fridge.
Do not put uncovered liquids into the fridge. Their evaporation will make the fridge have to work harder.
Heat only as much water as you require for drinks and cooking. If you keep forgetting, purchase an energy efficient eco kettle.
Use a convection oven. A small fan inside circulates hot air throughout the oven cutting cooking times by up to 30%.
Don’t preheat the oven for roasting.
Don’t keep opening the oven door. Every time you do so, your oven loses 20°C of heat.
Put lamps in the corner of a room so that the light is reflected off two walls.
Turn down the temperature on your washing machine. Heating the water uses the majority of the electricity, so by doing a warm wash instead of a hot wash, big savings are possible. See Wash Most Clothes at 30 Degrees.
Defrost frozen food in the fridge since this helps to cool the fridge.
Running a full load in an efficient dishwasher will use less hot water than washing up by hand in the sink! Save money, save time, and save electricity.
Boil water in a kettle rather than on a hob to save 50-70% of the energy and to get your water boiled faster.
    let me win? :)

Pack up all of your sh!t and move to the mountains/small mountain town, find a rad place to live; small shack, windowless van, abandoned cougar den (you get the idea). Use firewood to stay warm in colder months since (if you’re a guy) there probably aren’t any females for miles, in the summer stay cool by rocking board shorts and cold beers on the river. Put down the X-Box controller and get after it outside of your plush new bachelor pad; go fishing, hiking, shoot guns, build a sketchy backyard skate park to session, play with sharp objects, hop on your snowboard, most importantly get off your ass.

Bottom line — live your life to the fullest, you’ll be sure to save some electricity in the process.

The best way to save electricity is to open the blinds during the day turn off the lights when your not at home and dress in warmer clothes!!!

  • Archie Morgan

The most common times to use lights in your home is in the evening, right around dinnertime. So save yourself a little bit of money on energy bills by finding creative and fun ways to dine in the dark. You could have a romantic candle light dinner or invite some mates over and have mystery dishes that people have to guess what they are. By doing this a few times a week you can save a fair amount of money!

Also a shameless plug, it is my birthday today!

    The Buttered Cat Paradox

We all know that if you drop a slice of buttered toast it will land face down. We also know that cats will always land on their feet. A simple solution to energy production would be to attach a slice of buttered toast to a cats back, and drop the cat. The cat will then enter an endless gyroscopic motion, which could then be used for limitless energy production.

To reduce the use of energy should be left to the laptop and the phone then to pack a flashlight, a small gas stove, some food and drinks, board, bindings, boots, goggles, shovel. Take your friends and take the first bus and go to the mountains then pitch a tent in the wild conditions of nature in the powder. Light a small fire, fry the sausages then put to sleep and the next day ride as much as possible, and so on every day! Simple? Of course, that simple and that good for nature! Peace

Use a power saver when plugging your car in at night. It really only needs a few hours a night and when your in the mountains shredding it up there’s a good chance you’ll have to plug your car in. You could also do stuff like leave your oven open after cooking since it’ll be on anyways. Turn the heat down at night and turn off all your electronics. You won’t need your cable when your sleeping. have you ever seen “into the wild” ? sick flick. People should go out and camp or something. the old way! or plan B… go and LIVE in the wilderness and learn to fend for survival without the use of a switch, or plug-in.

  • Daniel Webb

Go out and snowboard all day but not at a resort because the chair lifts require electricity. Hike into the back country and camp there. You will have to use fire to stay warm, the hiking is way better for you and you are not using electricity. Plus you will feel great if you are wearing Electric gear.

Energy usage in the U.S. from items that aren’t even in use, simply plugged in, reaches several billion dollars a year. There are several brands of office supply and ergonomics products that offer simple power outlet racks that allow you to unplug items when not in use and hang them right next to the outlet. This eliminates “vampire” power usage.

Buy energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs for your most-used lights. Although they cost more initially, they save money in the long run by using only 1/4 the energy of an ordinary incandescent bulb and lasting 8-12 times longer. They provide an equivalent amount of bright, attractive light. Only 10% of the energy consumed by a normal light bulb generates light.

Forgive me for being here using this electronic device on this epic powder day, should be out hiking and shredding the gnar, but i got a cold, probably thanks to all the energy consuming tourists that invade our hillsides here from LA and their sick playstation addicted kids. Ok here goes the energy savings:Burn wood to keep warm, don’t be lazy and use electric heat, heaters use the most power of any electric appliance in your house, except maybe your hot tub.. go to the natural hot springs and get naked.. Buy 333 skis or split boards, they are made with 0 grid power, all solar and a tiny bit of gas power. The ski lifts are going to run wether you are on them or not.. so use them. of course they will use a little more power due to your extra weight on them, so ride to the top and go for a hike. switch to LED lighting if you can, or use lower wattage light bulbs. Go solar! Go Campin! or just don’t pay your electric bill till you get shut off and camp at home.. be a hermit.. something frowned upon by society, but bums and hermits use the least energy of anyone out there.. so next time you see a bum give em a high five! then wash your hands

Straight up just being conscious of the “no-brainers”! Its 7:00 a.m. and your friends calling your ass to inform you of the rad pow day ahead of you. You wake up, turn on your bedroom lights, and walk into the bathroom down the hall to go shower. What’s next? You proceed to turn on the shower and wait 20 minutes for it to warm up while you go downstairs to fix yourself up some breakfast by snagging some frosted flakes and milk for those strong bones. Only thing is, you don’t close the refrigerator all the way. Now we got the lights on in your bedroom, television still on from last night, shower running, refrigerator open, and on top of all that, you were surprisingly feeling pretty warm so you felt like turning on the air conditioning rather than just cracking a window. All you gotta do is stay on top of your shit and you can easily save a lot of wasted electricity for those times when you really need it like after a long day of shredding. ;)

  • erik

2 winters ago we ripped out our old baseboard heaters, and installed wood heat. By using all the blow down in our yard we are able to heat our home every winter without spending a cent, or using extra electricity plus nothing drys boots/ wet mitts faster than laying them on the ducting I ran into our coatroom. With the extra cash I can cough up for a sixer at the end of the day which fuels my fire!
p.s. As of today I’m totally hurting for goggles, I scorped onto my face across a ledge, crushed my old, faithful EG2′s and melted the knee out of my pants! Hook a brother up! Prease! Seriously I can’t go back to riding in antiquated Arnette Type 2′s even if they are pimpin mint yellow…..

Turn your heat off people. Just chill in your jacket in your house. It’ll bring you closer to nature. *Does not apply to gas heating*

  • Scott Y.

Keep the fridge real full of pop and beer. The fridge saves energy when it is full. You can always take out packs of pop if you need the room. If you’re broke like I get at times and frequntly have an empty fridge, unplug it and get a small dorm fridge that can be put almost anywhere. If you have to heat your house but only frequnt a room or two, put up sheets or blankets to divide a room or block off rooms without doors. I block off my large kitchen that doesn’t have a door.

One last thing, invite as much of your friends over then have a jumping jack contest. Winner gets a grilled cheese sandwich (made by putting your toaster on its side, toast inserted with cheese on top, when toast is done put both slices together making sandwich)and you get a house warmed with body heat!

  • Zach

Oh best way is to just unplug all the unused electrical items in your house. Such as lamps, phone chargers, printers, etc. By doing that you can save more in a year than by using solar paneling! Trust me with this. I live in Oregon and everybody knows how Oregonians are!

GO OUTSIDE AND ENJOY NATURE!i.e. snowboard skateboard surf and turn all unnecessary house appliances off that saves all electric costs.

  • Gus

The simplest & most proven cost effective way of saving energy (& money) is to insulate the hell out of your home, by use of up to date foil faced phenolic insulation boards we achieve nearly 2x that of the equivilent of fibreglass insulation in 50% of the thickness or depth!

We try to insulate our most used rooms first (on a skint snowboarders budget) & are able to reduce our energy use (& therefore costs) by around 2/3rds of what it was previously.

As well as super-lagging (yes that’s what I said)! ..our hot water tank where so much day to day energy is used we save a further 25% on what it used to expend in energy by menas of heat retention.
..Oh & we get very energy-nazi by monitoring our ongoing use (using an Onzo monitor) & have room light based whole room on / off switches which even our 4yr old has got used to using, we tell her if she doesn’t do this then there will be no snow when she gets bigger.

An incentive to us all & not far off the truth!

well, a great way you could save on electricity would be to follow in Geico’s footsteps. You can spend 6 months teaching two guinea pigs to row a boat, and 8 months teaching one to yell row. Then set them into a small boat in a small container of water that has a propeller on it. That way one guinea pig yells row, which causes the other two to row the boat, then the circulation of the water will cause the propeller to spin. Then you loop a belt, similar to one from a car engine, through it and some form of alternator. You would then wire the alternator to a battery. After that, you can create a connection between that and any object in your house that requires electricity and power it that way instead. Not only will this drastically cut down on you use of electricity(which also takes away from your snowboarding fund(possibly limiting the endless great times on the mountain that can be had)), but it also gives you tons more entertainment for those days you dont get to go hit the slopes. I mean seriously, what else can top watching guinea pigs row a boat other then snowboarding!?

YOU CAN SAVE ENERGY BY USING THE FRICTION OF YOUR SNOWBOARD TO PRODUCE ENERGY TO RUN THE SKI LIFTS AND ALL THE ENERGY THAT IS REQUIRED FOR THE LODGE TO OPERATE AND FUNCTION.

just bring in nikola tesla and we’ll bring all the electricity we need out of thin air

    One word = Shred.

Create a spank bank instead of watching p0rn

  • adam

switch over to LED lighting and tv’s (if you can afford to)and use timers to shut stuff off. start simple and go from there. commit to it, to doing something.

turn off the lights when you leave a room

  • Madhav Gajjar

Simple. Switch off your electronics (TVs should be switched off completely and not put on stand by) and lights when you are not in the House. Hibernate your computer instead of putting it to sleep (sleeping drains your batteries still). Heating/AC can be switched off when you are not in the house too. You can leave your fridge on though.

You can do many things to save power, from a little bit to a lot! One thing you use most is lights. Replace them with halogen bulbs and get the long and BRIGHT halogen bulbs for your basement Snowboard waxing station. You could also just turn off the lights when youre not in the room.
I think the best way to save power would be an invention i made… WHat you do is put solar panels all over your snowboard with a battery that charges all day as youre riding the hills. Then when you go home, unhook the battery from your sweet board and plug it into your HD TV and it’s all powered for the night!!!!!!!!!!
So,.. That’s BY FAR the best way to save electricity in a GREAT way!!
    Josh,

SNOWBOARD LIKE THERE’S NO MORE SUN TOMORROW

  • Alex

Soak in some natural light. Open the blinds or a window and see the light, or go overboard and switch strictly sundial use, hand stitching everything, scoop an old school lawn mower, get on the grill and out of the oven, hand wash dishes, and chow down on candle lit dinners.

or just open those blinds up.

  • Nick

its simple if your out on the hill shreddin all day you wont be usin any electricity…… just gotta get out on the hill and jib all day…..

A cheap way of making your old boiler more efficient (rather than replacing it) is to just replace the old power-hungry water pump with a new efficient model, which will disperse the hot water through the radiators more quickly and quietly, saving electricity, and gas too, because the boiler doesn’t have to work so hard. Of course, you can also wear wool and turn the heat down a little. You can lower it even further when you sleep; you burn more calories that way anyway. Take a cold, short, shower. Wash clothes cold whenever you can. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer; wash the dishes yourself instead of using a dishwasher. Cook tomorrow’s dinner while the oven is still hot. Always soak legumes before you cook them, so that they’re done faster. Eat raw as much as possible. Keep salted or smoked fish and meat, and canned or jarred fruits, instead of using a freezer. Use wind-up alarms and clocks. Study or read books (or Snowboard Mag!) by daylight. At night, hang out together under the same low-watt light bulb. Better yet, sleep from sun to sun. Sunlight in your face and a low electricity bill will stop your brooding and earn you a ticket to the slopes!

STEP 1: Using a small piece of duct tape, attach a 12 gauge speaker wire to the edge of your stylin EC2 goggles. STEP 2: Place said goggles in bright and sunny location, ski slope comes to mind. STEP 3: Attach other end of speaker wire to iPod STEP 4: ROCK OUT WITH YOUR CO?K OUT!

  • Julian

Air dry dishes rather than using the heated drying cycle.
or Use compact fluorescent bulbs to light your home. Not only do these bulbs use less energy, but they last longer than traditional bulbs
or Take short showers instead of baths. The amount of water used, and heated is significantly less for a shower. and ride with bus and train or rather ride on gepards like in harold and kumar
    peace

  • žiga judar

instead of playing stoked, ssx or shaun white snowboarding on Playstation 3 or XBox 360 wich are using about 200 watts of electricity, go outside build kicker or lay down a rail and have fun snowboarding.

  • Alex C

Go out riding with a solar panel attached to my back pack, shredding around the mountain saving electricity and looking good!

  • Stas Milev

another idea, late though… tweak off the fridge bulb – it’s not really needed, is it? :-)

  • Daniel

one of the main ways they teach us to save electricity in school is by shutting off computers during the night time when there is no need for it. Don’t do laundry everyday, only if you must, you can save a lot of money if you wait for a full load. Hope that people follow these!

  • asti

    so…. who won? :-D

You can save electricity in many ways!! If everyone turns off there lights when there not home, thats ALOT of electricity being saved. You can also watch less tv, turn the brightness down on your screens to your computer, or phone. If everyone does 1 little thing, like turning off your lights when there not in use, it can make a huge difference! And of course, you can also go shredding! That requires no electricity, and its a ton of fun. Go snowboarding, save our electricity!
