The thoughts of Snowboarder Magazine go out to the friends and family of Aaron “A-Rob” Robinson. On Tuesday the 19th of July, 2011 Aaron Robinson passed away while snowboarding in Chile. The circumstances surrounding this tragedy are still vague but what is certain is that the riding community lost one it’s own on this day. Aaron was a vibrant part of the fabric of our sport. A-Rob’s love for the alpine in all forms was pure and infectious. His dynamic skills shined from inside the park to beyond the piste. Aaron lived for riding and adventure and the relationships they presented. From the time I spent with A-Rob since first meeting him a few seasons back I can find some solace in knowing that he was on another journey and strapped in when his time came, albeit much too soon.

I wanted to write something up about Aaron but it wouldn’t have been the same as coming out of Snowboarder Mag’s mouths.

R.I.P. Aaron. At least you went out riding.

I feel so lucky to have known such a great person. Nobody lived it better than A Rob. He was so full of positive energy that It’s hard to really describe in words. Aaron had so much talent and never took a bit of it for granted. He’ll be missed so much by myself and so many others.

  • Manning ShredTography

Heart breaking! Any time any snowboarder dies is a loss to our family. My thoughts go out to all the family and friends of A Rob. A truly bright spirit will be missed.

  • Mason Tuor

I only met A Rob a few times but was blown away and admittedly envious of the positivity that radiated from him. He just seemed stoked about everything and he was an amazing snowboarder. He’s obviously loved by the many people who had the privilege of meeting him and admired by others who only had the opportunity too see him shred. His passing is a great loss to this world but the time he spent here was most certainly not wasted. To all of his friends and family, I know your grief must be unbearable, but please find comfort in the fact that Aaron inspired so many different people in such a positive way, even those of us who barely knew him. R.I.P. Aaron.

    A Rob,

Today we mourn you, a friend, a brother, a son. Today we mourn you a brother in arms, a snowboarder, an inspiration. Today our hearts weigh heavy and our tears are heard like thunder from the heavens, today you leave this part of the journey to move forward into the next chapter of your adventure. Today we think about the ones that have moved on before you, today seems as if it will never end, but it will.
For tomorrow the leaves will change color and cold winds will be crisp on our breath. Tomorrow the skies will be clear and the mountains you loved will loom out over us, asking us to come near. Tomorrow we will no longer feel sorrow; tomorrow we will embrace your spirit. Tomorrow we will ride with you, our hearts and minds at peace with your presence. Tomorrow will be yours and ours, you protecting us, guiding us, embracing us; as we laugh, remember, and honor you forever.
Until tomorrow my friend, until then.

I had the pleasure of getting to know A-Rob and shooting photos of him riding steep lines in the deep. He was the most genuine person I have ever met and truly took joy and pleasure in absolutely every moment of every day. He was always enthusiastic, inspired and motivated. He will inspire absolutely every person that sees him ride and will be greatly missed by all. He left a huge impression on me and will always live on in my memories.

I was in our back yard last night when Graeme broke the news to me. After getting off the phone I walked around the garden to process what I had just heard. A hummingbird flew into the garden close to me and hovered for a bit. The grace and speed of the hummingbird reminded me of Aaron; and then it flew off just as quickly as it entered the garden. Watching this bird come and go like that and thinking about Aaron brought home to me just how fleeting life can be sometimes.

I’ve only hung out with Aaron a couple handfuls of times, but the bond was real. I had the pleasure of having dinner at his family’s home in Whitefish along with some friends. The positivity and love around the table is something I won’t forget. It was easy to see where he got his outlook on life. Another memory etched in my mind was the day we hiked up and rode the slot for the first time. I remember looking back and seeing Aaron’s smile and gleam in his eye. Can’t find the picture from that moment. Hopefully I can dig that up and share it.

    Damn. RIP Aaron.

Pam and family – You brought a wonderful, bright soul into this world 24 years ago. I looked forward to seeing Aaron every year at the Banked Slalom, brief though our visits were. He was so joyful, genuine and positive, and the world was a better place for having him in it. Gwyn, Nicole, myself and the Mt. Baker crew send you our deepest condolences.

I had the privilege to ride with Aaron last year in Chile. He loved it down there; the culture, the mountains, the women…
Every chairlift I ever shared with him, he had me laughing the whole time. He charged big lines with style and heart, and I think everyone who had to chance to see him snowboard knew he was one of the best up and coming freeriders in the world. He will be heavily missed in the Northwest. R.I.P. Aaron.

Mark Sullivan tried to call me yesterday to tell me the news, but I’m up in Canada at the Camp of Champions so I don’t pick my phone up much. He left me a message, and then sent me a text. All the text said was “ARob”.

I didn’t check the message until hours later, but when I saw the text, all I could think of was all the good times that I have had with ARob over the last few seasons. Seeing his name reminded me of what a character that kid was- how he would always camp in the lodges at the North Face Masters stops- hanging his wet jacket, pants, hoodies, underlayers etc up all over the place like the whole lodge was his personal hotel room, how hilarious his crazy “AK crib’s” episode was at Tailgate a couple years back- showing how dope his totally trashed and run down car was. I thought about the rad switch straightline he did at KOTH this year, how he snaked me on a line in JH and I how I had to almost walk down the rocks after he sluffed the whole thing out. I thought about how that kid had endless style, and was someone I looked up to as leading the way for the next generation of freeriders, the true mountain kids dedicated to snowboarding to their core. I thought of Aaron, his smile, his love of shredding, his friendship, his never ending positivity, and I just had to laugh. I thought about how he must be having the time of his life slashing pow in Chile right then. I was stoked for him and stoked to see him again this winter. I didn’t know what Mark was trying to tell me until much later, and I still can’t believe it.

The weather forecast for Whistler today was supposed to be terrible- up to 15 cms of rain and fog all the way to the top. I rolled out of bed thinking how much grayer the world seemed without ARob- and how much I was going to miss my friend. I made my way up to the Camp of Champs park through the thick cloud layer, dedicated to throwing out some solid methods on the kickers in honor of ARob- no matter the conditions.

And then something miraculous happened. At around noon, on a day that was supposed to be one of the rainiest all week, the clouds began to part and the sun actually shone down on us in all its glory, lighting up the jumps and pipe to perfection. It was surreal. I looked up and I swear I could actually feel Aaron’s presence shining down on us through the clouds, throwing us a bit of stoke on a gloomy day, just like he always did. I realized then and there he will always be with us. In the sun on a cloudy day, in the whoops you hear through the trees from your friends as you slash the deep pow, in the endless beauty and potential the mountains hold for those who dare to play in them… ARob you will be there, I know this to be true. Thank you for being in my life, I will miss you dearly bro. RK

Rest in Peach Aaron! I knew you as a young boy, as I was your babysitter many times and probably let you stay up way too late, watch too much tv and eat too many sweets while your parents were out. My deepest prayers and love are with you and your wonderful parents and brothers. Peace be with you.

I work with Jeff Robinson and there was hardly a week between the times Jeff would come in the office and we would watch Aaron shredding some mountain. The Robinsons are such a close and devoted family that I am sure they will be able to celebrate Aarons life in the days to come. Aaron was one of the nicest and coolest guys I was honored to meet. Aaron lived his life to the fullest. I wish i could have experienced half of the adventures Aaron did. RIP Aaron.
