Words & Photos: Kimmy Fasani & Kelly Clark
On December 27th Kelly Clark and myself, Kimmy Fasani, pushed the panic button and made a last minute decision to go find winter. Kelly, who has won 12 consecutive halfpipe contests, would normally be committed to comps however with the shifting of schedules and lack of snow, she ended up with a 10 day window to make a powder trip happen. I had been laying low, riding park in Mammoth for the past 2 months and was eager to get back in the white room. Japan was getting hammered with snow and upon our departure; the Niseko area had already received a record-breaking amount of snowfall. After communication with a local photographer, Neil Hartmann, and Burton teammate, Yuki Furihata, we were assured that conditions were epic. So, as everyone was enjoying their Christmas to New Year Holiday Kelly and I were dialing in the loose details of our powder hunting adventure. By the 28th of December we had flights, shuttles, and lodging booked, as well as two photographers, Neil Hartmann and Key Sato, lined up. We left LAX on December 31st, flew across the dateline to ring in the New Year, and lets just say Japan was the perfect way to start 2012! Here’s a quick glimpse at our Japow experience with a collaboration of photos from Kelly and me.
