North Island. Cheap & Deep. Japan on Two Grand
By: T. Bird
You’ve seen the photos and the footage. Pow aplenty, perfectly-spaced trees, and fields of pillows as far as the eye can see. It’s every snowboarder’s dream to ride the North Island of Japan, but it’s a long way from the mountains of North America, isn’t it? Yeah, it is. Does “couch surfing” even translate to the Nippon culture? Probably not. So wouldn’t logic point to the fact that it’s more financially feasible to simply go to Colorado, Utah, California, or Canada during your coveted vacation time? Not necessarily. If you play your cards right, it isn’t totally out of the question to cross the North Island off of your “have ridden” list. With the right resources (like this feature, perhaps), a little research, and a small amount of planning, an excursion to Japan is an entirely viable option for your next big adventure. Don’t believe me? Read on and see for yourself how Keegan Valaika, Jack Mitrani, Mikkel Bang and I did Japan on two grand.
