Rider Profiles: JP Walker

There’s something to be said about a guy who films an entire part switch. Born and raised in Mormon country, J.P is one of the most influential riders regardless of what generation you come from. Killing it on screen for over a decade, J.P has accomplished more while strapped in than most people will ever dream of. Simply put, if you don’t know already, you better ask somebody.

What's the best way to end a 3 week tour across Europe with the 32 team? How about 2 more weeks in Finland for some heavy street rail sessioning. Helsinki has been one of our favorite cities to film rails at for a long time now. I first went there about 8 years ago and Simon about 9. We have invested lots of time into the city discovering all the keys spots and local secrets but I think we have still only scratched the surface of what this place has to offer. Simon and I were already well adapted to the time zone after spending a few weeks in Europe but the other half of our crew, Andre Chamberlain and Blair McKinney, flew in fresh from Canada. We accelerated their recovery from the jet-lag with an onslaught of leaf steaks and Hesburger interludes and by ushering them through the streets of Helsinki 4 deep in our 2 person van with no reclining seats. Lots of time time was spent arguing about which spot had the best leaf steaks and me trying to convince the guys to try different selects of the harshest salmianki candies, some that make an extra strength Fisherman's Friend taste like a child's lollipop. This was only our second official film trip for our Jibberish project and it was a challenge to tool it up straight from another trip but it was tight. Everyone killed it and Blair and Andre fit into the Finnish puzzle like a well beaten leaf steak into my chassis.

ThirtyTwo just wrapped up a 2 week across Europe. We started in the UK and went to Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France. Europe was in a deep freeze with temps in the -20 range the whole time. All the resorts we rode at had dope parks and we even found so good pow that wasn't tracked out at a few places. Joe got beasted and had to visit two different hospitals but pulled through. Scott toasted his shoulder at the first spot within 20 minutes but held tough the rest of trip and got back on his grind near the end. We met up with a bunch of the new 32 euro am's and the were ripping. The whole trip was a blur as we were never in one country for more than a few days. Maximum respect to everyone that we met and that helped us out along the way. One.

The first stop of the ThirtyTwo Euro tour was England. Unlike other team trips everyone of us got some dome. Snow Dome that is. We hit Chill Factore, SnowDome and The Snow Center. Every spot was awesome and all the locals we shredding hard and killing it. Unfortunately Scott Stevens couldn't contain himself and hurt his shoulder during the first session but has been hanging tough on the sidelines. We started our journey in London and up to Manchester and back. I took a midnight stroll down to London Bridge and got my tourist shot handled but missed the last train back and had stroll the mean streets of London back to the Shoreditch district dolo. It was a quick 3 days but we had a blast and I hope we can come back again sometime soon. Shout out to all the locals that came out to see us.

The ice has been broken. This is one of the latest starts I've ever had filming for a video part. Last season this time of the year my rail footy was more than half way done. It's ok though, because of the late season we have found ourselves deep in northern Ontario looking for new spots that we would have normally never thought about going to.

Simon Chamberlain and Myself have decided to partner up this season and start a new online web video series called Jibberish. We will have tons of free videos dropping all winter and a full part each coming in the fall of 2012. All content will be free. Our new website that is featuring all this stuff is called absolutejibberish.com. This dispatch is about out first trip filming for this new project.

After going to the Bone Zone, I gave Jeremy Jones a shout to see if I could go shoot The Spot. It's in the same remote area as the Bone Zone just a few clicks to the South East. The Bone Zone is my crew so I was stoked when Jeremy said I could come shoot. But I have also known Jeremy and J.P. Walker for a long time. Like, a really long time. Before Forum. We have never been super tight or anything but have always had a mutual respect for each other. Maybe that is the problem. I am in total photo mode right now. Nothing more, nothing less. Having known them so long, the rock star factor is not there for me. Unfortunately, it's like that in snowboarding for me with a lot of pro's from being in it so long. But once those 2 dudes strapped in and started doing their thing, it hit me. I am in the middle of nowhere with J.P. Walker and Jeremy Jones shooting photos. Wow. It was all very clear now why they are who they are for a few reasons. They are still really good friends. They push each other and get along like they just struck the friendship. They also have a savage work ethic and combine that with confidence, it's a good formula. Then there is the snowboarding. Once they started hitting those rails it was hard to concentrate on the photos. I just wanted to watch them snowboard. Seeing it that up close and personal blew my mind. They are true masters of their craft and again, why they are who they are. JP and Jeremy are bosses of the sport for a reason.

DoNZ Dispatch: ThirtyTwo in New Zealand

ThirtyTwo just wrapped an epic trip to New Zealand. Ten days of skating, eating, drinking and playing soccer. Oh yeah and we snowboarded a little bit. We started in Auckland and then flew down to Wanaka and rode Snowpark and Cardrona but while we were there a 50-year storm dumped on both islands and essentially shut the whole country down. At first it didn't seem like a big deal when we strolled the streets of Queenstown in 8 inches of snow, as we have all been in that type of weather before, but when we started to understand just how rare an occasion it really was for snow to blanket the low elevation so thoroughly we decided to improvise. Surprisingly the resorts shut down because of too much snow but we ended up sessioning the local skatepark with some Queenstown locals while the city tried to sort itself out. We also snuck in skate sessions at lots of the local parks on both islands and got a good after hour session in at the indoor resort Snowplanet. Our NZ connect Ryan hooked us up real good and was super patient with our Stienlager fueled crew of indecisiveness. As well the New Zealand locals are always extremely hospitable and were quick to oblige us with all request and helped us to deplete the countryside of lamb shanks and sadats. Maximum Respect.

The Don’s Dispatch: JP Walker 1.1 Mt Hood

The Unit just wrapped up a session at Mt. Hood for HCSC session 5. The weather was perfect and there was tons of snow up there. Our days were spent on hill in an inverted position with arm flexed and minimal rail contact. After a long season on the grind it's good to switch up your game for bit. The mini pipe and QP was our jam and both saw a barrage of hand plants. Evenings were spent at the ramps or doing various other activities with the kids that an adult would usually be scorned for like foam pit jousting or releasing pent up anger on unsuspecting campers with high speed dodge balls to the dome piece.. We tortured ourselves multiple times daily with an onslaught of frozen pizzas and even tooled up a few in the morning pre-shred. We also revisited an abandoned gas station with a perfect manual pad and then cooled off at the infamous punch bowl near Hood River with a couple 80 foot cliff jumps. All the campers were awesome and it was another solid week logged at the Hood. See you next summer.
