Snowboarder Magazine 2010 Rider of the Year Awards

For over a decade, SNOWBOARDER has released our annual Rider of the Year issue to recognize those pros whose accomplishments most impacted our sport in a given season. While meant to entertain, inform, and incite discussion, the ultimate goal of this tally is to reflect the importance of these riders to the greater snowboarding world. While on the surface this initiative may seem grandiose, it is our sincere agenda to provide a platform which brings credit to those whose efforts at the very top affect everyone who enjoys the slopes. It is this long tail of the lone rider which we choose to celebrate. For example, the labor of a solitary champion in a remote private halfpipe may cause a mom-and-pop hill in the Midwest to feel the need to get their first pipe cutter, or an X Games victor’s double backside rodeos could compel a reluctant consumer to get a reverse camber and enjoy the runs of their life. The bounds of our belief in professional influence are so vast that we can even go so far as to picture a Vancouver Olympic hopeful as an inspiration to other kids from Ohio to follow their dreams of being world-famous dancers. This list is a product of that reach. This is SNOWBOARDER Magazine’s Top Ten Riders of 2010.
The validity of any ranking rests on the criteria being considered and the merits of those being granted the privilege of weighing in. With our Top Ten Riders of the Year awards, SNOWBOARDER strives to showcase those who consistently rode at the highest level last season. In other words, when these people were buckled in they were putting out, regardless of if it was in a mainstream contest arena, back-alley urban mission, or isolated alpine film session. The voters were provided tons of top videos to review as well as all the major contest results for consideration. Who gets to voice their opinion is the other critical piece of this puzzle, and also why our ranking is regarded as the most esteemed of all annual accolades. The only people eligible to vote for SNOWBOARDER’s Top Ten Riders of the Year are those who have themselves appeared on this list at least once. Therefore, it truly is a breakdown of the best, by the best.

[...] Rider of the Year Awards – These awards are usually based on the opinions of a small group of people within the snowboarding industry and as a result they can be biased. Shawn White, for example, probably receives fewer industry awards than he deserves, just because he is a twat. (examples: Transworld Snowboarding’s ‘12th Annual Rider’s Poll’ nominees and awards, Snowboarder Magazine’s ‘Rider of the Year Awards 2010’) [...]
