Rest In Peace Tom and cheers to a life well lived. Thank you for all your contributions. Snowboarding definitely wouldn’t be what it is without you.

RIP…61, way too young to die!

  • La Conchita guy

I thought Chuck Barfoot was the TRUE Godfather/inventor of Snowboarding?

    • edelweiss

Barfoot and Sims were partners back in the day bro. Whoever fucking invented “The Snurfer” is actually the TRUE inventor of snowboarding lol. Burton, Olson, Sims, Barfoot, etc, all claimed to have made better models of the Snurfer as teenagers in the 60′s when the Snurfer was came out.

La Conchita is in S. Cal. Not where the snow flies. Of course you would assume things you know nothing about, it’s the S. Cal way. The Turkish dudes invented snowboarding, moron. Ask Jeremy Jones. Chucky is the guy who laughs the most and has the biggest heart and you know, for as much shit as people like you want to throw around about Tom, he was really a great guy with a huge passion for riding, like all of us. So who gives a flying squirrel’s ass who did what first? Tom did a lot of things first and so did Chuck and so did Jake and all the other manufacturers. I did some shit first too, What did YOU do, besides put someone down while trying to pump someone up?

Thanks for running all the great photos of Tom, one of the greatest athletes of all time and the first Superstar of snowboarding. Back in the beginning of the sport, Tom was the hardest guy for his own team to beat, not to mention everyone else.

I hope he’s surfing with Craig now. Craig leaving the Sims team in 1987 for Burton was one of the biggest heartbreaks of Tom’s life. One of Tom’s greatest gifts was his uncanny ability to spot and nurture talent.
Sherman Poppen invented the Snurfer which was without a doubt the first commercially successful snowboard.
Chuck Barfoot was Tom’s right hand man until they split up. One of my happiest moments in snowboarding was seeing them make up and become friends again.

Thanks to Sims, I have one of my first scars. I was riding one of his skateboards when I was in grade school, hit a rock, flew off the board and straight onto a section of a broken Coke bottle. I still have that scar but, sadly, no longer have the board. I wore it out.
Thanks for bringing activity and fun to those of us who lived in an era prior to video games and cable television.
Thanks for being True to Thine Own Self.
    Rest In Peace
