Pro snowboarders from Switzerland seem to have a few things in common. First, none of them speak Swiss (most speak German or French, while the rest speak Italian or something called Romansch). Second, they all seem to spend their formative years hiking the U-pipe. Third, once you’ve decided they’re “pretty good for a pipe jock,” they grow some balls, take it to the backcountry, and show you their true colors—big-mountain powderhounds with a taste for big tweaks in tight situations. Next up, following in the hallowed tracks of De Marchi, Müller, Kalbermatten, and Keller, we have ‘Mu’ Maurer, the latest addition to the Pirates Crew roster: smooth as (Swiss) chocolate, and nice as pie.

How would you define your snowboarding style?
People have told me that I look like I’m not really motivated when I ride, which is totally not deliberate and not how I want it to look.

Tell me something that your friends give you shit for.
Definitely my big, flat feet. They started to call me “Alfred Jodukus Quack,” which is this duck cartoon character we have here in Switzerland…you can google it!

Besides snowboarding, what other talents do you have?
Right now I’m working hard on my cooking skills, but I’ve still got a long way in front of me, that’s for sure.

What’s the worst thing about being Swiss?
We have a really high quality of life, which is awesome, but on the other hand, it means that society expects so much of you. You’re supposed to have the good job, the big house, get married, have kids, be responsible, work super hard, and so on… Living your life in a different way isn’t really an option in Switzerland!
