Sanctuary Artsite, 47 Maple Street, hosts the "FRESHJIVE MAD DOG CHRONICLES," a
traveling retrospective of legendary skateboarder Tony Alva featuring the
photography of Wynn Miller and the ad designs of Eric Monson. Tony Alva and Wynn
Miller will attend the opening reception, sponsored in part by Magic Hat Brewing
Co., Friday, April 11th, beginning at 7:00 pm.
Tony "Mad Dog" Alva put a face on what was once considered the underground sport
of skateboarding. Alva's no-apologies skate style put him on top as a pro
skateboarder in the late 70's and early 80's claiming such titles as World
Professional Overall skateboarder. But it was his punked-out image that put him
on the cover of magazines, in feature films, and later helped him to launch a
skateboard shop under his name (Alva Skateboard Company still exists, operated
out of Oceanside, CA).
Photographer Wynn Miller elevated action skate photography when he took on Tony
Alva! Already well-documented as a pro-skateboarder, Wynn photographed the
everyday Alva - at home, with his fans, on the phone - and Alva'a original,
groundbreaking ad campaign was centered around this photography.

Alva realized a resurgence of fame with the 2002 release and subsequent success
of "Dog Town and Z-Boys," a docu-film exposing the truth birth of skateboarding
sub-culture which featured him along with early teammates and peers.
