All you could hear were screeching wheels and barking trucks. Dudes were rippin’! After nearly two years in the making, the new Volcom Brothers Skatepark in Mammoth Lakes, CA, is finally open. Thanks to the hard-ass work of so many people*, California’s best snowboard resort now boasts a world-class skatepark. Master park builder Mark Hubbard and the Grindline crew upped the ante with another concrete behemoth. Helmets off to the building crew, ’cuz this park rocks. Seriously, there are really rocks to skate—super-smooth concrete right up to boulders. There’s also a giant cradle, a Burnside wall, lumps, humps, a big ‘ol bowl, a love seat wall, plus zillions of different transfers and trannies, too. Its really epic; a new skate-asylum for southern California!
Skatepark supporters, the entire Mammoth Lakes community, and hella mad dogs came out to celebrate the grand opening on Saturday, September 24th. Omar Hassan, Aaron Suski, Peter Hewitt, Darren Navarette, Dennis Busenitz, Matt Dove, Tony Hawk, and other pro shredders made appearances and skated tough all weekend. The attending shreds included Romain DeMarchi, DCP, Eddie Wall, Kirk Short, JP Solberg, Gigi Rüf, and many more. Keegan Valaika and Luke Mitrani were trying to learn rodeo flips off a hip tranny. Not sure if they stuck it clean… Hundreds of friends of Jeff Anderson and his family were all there to share the positive skate vibes. Speeches were made and proper respects were paid to everyone who helped carry the new park from dream to reality. Burgers were grilled, fishes were stale, and the sport drinks popped like ollies in the warm autumn sun. Lots of heads camped out and made a weekend of it; you can’t beat the scenic Sierras, the clean mountain air and, of course, fresh concrete.
After-skate action included a sick live show in Mammoth Village at Fever. Legendary skate-rockers JFA, Agent Orange, and Clay Wheels played hard and loud to a swarm of sweaty, wasted scrubs. It was wicked. Down in the desert at Volcamp, things were getting weird. Then suddenly, the sun came up. After a short morning sesh, our wagon of sore, crusted carcasses pulled out of Mammoth on Sunday. Cars full of skaters were pulling up and people were just startin’ to crack off. Imagine 45,000 square feet of sprackable gnar—all for the taking. The Volcom Brothers Skatepark is now open. Basically, you gotta go skate it. You know why, now go.
