Last March, Oakley and SNOWBOARDER Magazine brought eight of the key, core retailers from the US to Mammoth Mountain, California for the Oakley Shred Shop Challenge, a loose-format contest that tested up to four staff members from each shop in the arena that led to them spending time on the retail floor in the first place. On hill, riders from Colorado’s Satellite, Utah’s Milosport, California’s Active Ride Shop and Wave Rave, Washington’s evo and SnoCon, Vermont’s Darkside and Massachusetts’ Eastern Boarder were tasked to drop into creations set up by the Mammoth Unbound Park Staff. Transitions were tackled, rails were ridden, and copious amounts of sake was consumed in celebration off hill. At the end of two days of events, the locals from Wave Rave took first place overall. Did we mention each team rode in costume, too? Thanks to all of the shops that came in competed, hung out, and celebrated the integral part that they play in snowboarding.

“The reason why Oakley and SNOWBOARDER Magazine have partnered to bring this together here at Mammoth Mountain, California is because you guys are the front lines of retail. You guys are the first, the entre that people have to snowboarding and if we can take the eight stores that are represented here today, and every store could take from your model, and take the spirit and take the passion, and take the knowledge and bring it to the sales floor, our sport would be in a lot better shape today and people that are out there on snowboards would be having a lot more fun and enjoying the sport that much more knowing that they’re taking the knowledge that you guys bestow on them and translating it in their first experience snowboarding.” – Pat Bridges
